VK01020052 - Complex of methods of biological and physical retrospective dosimetry for radiation emergency (2023-2026, MV0/VK)

The current international political situation is drawing attention to the issues of the threat of misuse of ionizing radiation sources, including possible attacks on nuclear power plants and use of nuclear weapons. In the field of nuclear safety and radiation protection, it is necessary to take into account scenarios involving a large number of irradiated persons who were not equipped with conventional dosemeters. The existing system of already established methods of physical retrospective dosimetry needs to be supplemented by methods of biological dosimetry not yet implemented, and to verify their mutual compatibility and complementarity. The increase in capacity consists in the use of advanced (semi)automated biomedical technologies and interlaboratory cooperation.

VJ01010026 - Effective use of forensic evidence methods to combat wildlife crime (2021-2025, MV0/VJ)

The project proposes the creation of a consortium associating scientific capacities of Charles University and the Academy of Sciences, which will focus on research and use of forensic science in the field of environmental (wildlife) crime. Activities will focus on research and evaluation of methods of forensic genetics, morphology, stable isotope, radionuclide, chemical analyses, their possible combination including standardization of procedures so that a quality professional service of enforcement bodies in the form of scientifically based forensic analyzes can be provided. By using existing and functional professional capacities, which will be newly focused on applied research in forensic sciences, the quality and effectiveness of detecting this form of crime will increase.

DH23P03OVV003 - Artifact as a source of knowledge: Rescue and preservation of research data of archaeological finds (2023-2027, MK0/DH)

The project systematically will prevent the existing widespread damage of research data carried by objects of heritage protection, especially archaeological finds. The first goal is to create heritage/preservation guidelines for dealing with artifacts as a set of sensitive research data, which must be secured before any further intervention. It means, for example, determining the provenance of raw-materials, their recycling, technological production processes, details of intensity, trajectory and purpose of functional use, reasons of artifact discard from these processes and conditions of their deposition. Developed in-situ analytical measurements or fracture micro-sampling will be used to provide this research data, enabling dating, place of origin identification, genetic analysis in the case of bones and many other analyzes. The second goal is to create data for systematic enlightenment based on comparative analyses of preserved and non-preserved samples in a wide range of archaeological movable monuments, tools of various materials, ceramics, art, human and animal bones and other types of findings. The target groups are professional archaeologists of rescue research, museum staff incl. museum archaeologists, the public involved in detector research, and the general public. The third goal is to establish a laboratory for comprehensive rescue of research data, which, in cooperation with target groups, will ensure all research data and urgent stabilization of the surface layer of artifacts so that any further conservation does not hinder scientific knowledge. This laboratory will be based on the existing laboratory of optical microscopy ÚAM FF MU, whose equipment will be extended by other methods so that it will be possible to cover all types of archaeological mobile finds, all forms of preservation from imprints in the sediment or patina layer, through unstable residues to cohesive fragments, and completely preserved findings.
