Successful operation of the neutrino experiment KATRIN in 2020
10. 12. 2020
In spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, the international experiment KATRIN at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology continued its long-term measurements of the tritium beta spectrum. The final aim is to assess, in the model independent way, the neutrino rest mass with unprecedented sensitivity of 0.2 eV.
During 2020, the KATRIN beam line was in operation for 193 days, including 48 days of the 83mKr runs for verification and calibration. The source of gaseous 83mKr emitting monoenergetic electrons was developed in our institute, the mother isotope 83Rb was produced at the Centrum of Accelerators and Nuclear Analytical Methods (CANAM).
In addition, we covered an agreed part of operator shifts at the KIT.
