Analysis of the "Liberec Codex"
10. 12. 2018
The Radiocarbon Laboratory started the analysis of base fabric of the so-called "Liberec Codex".
The "Liberec Codex" is one of the unique objects in Czech museum collections. It has been assumed to be a modern falsum of the Mayan codex created in the 1920s. Many researchers believe that its agave fibre paper, which is covered by a plaster layer, is much older and comes from the mid-15th century. Most drawings and calendar data on the pages lack sense; these are attributed to the well-known engraver and falsifier Genaro Lopéz. However, six pages of the booklet contain unique and entirely valid data from the Mayan twenty-day cycle. This gives hope that part of the document is genuine and has been created in the mid-15th century.
In cooperation with Mgr. Petra Šťovíčková and other colleagues from the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec, Ing. Ivo Světlík, Ph.D. and Natálie Megisová took a sample of the base fabric layer of the codex. The sample will now be analyzed and its age determined using the radiocarbon dating method.
