Nuclear Physics and Related Fields in the Basic, Applied and Interdisciplinary Research

Institutional Research Plan No. AV0Z10480505 of NPI CAS for 2005-2010

NPI CAS is directed to the basic research in the fields of main nuclear physics trends and other closely related fields. Further, to the applications of nuclear physics and its methods in the interdisciplinary and  the oriented research.  Topics of basic research are the following.

Study of Bulk Strongly Interacting Matter in Heavy Ion Collisions

Research of the hot and compressed hadronic matter, phase transitions, search for partonic  effects and the quark-gluon plasma. Participation in the experiments at the facility RHIC in Brookhaven National Laboratory, at the project ALICE on the accelerator LHC in CERN, at the projects HADES and CBM in GSI Darmstadt.

Nuclei far form the stability

Research of the exotic nuclei with a large number of neutrons or protons. Participation at the experiments on the accelerator GANIL in France and at JINR Dubna.

Nuclear astrophysics

Research of light nuclei reactions important for the astrophysics. Experiments at the cyclotron U-120M of NPI CAS and at the cyclotron of T &M University in Texas.

Neutrino Mass from Electron Spectroscopy

Development of the low-energy electron spectroscopy aimed to the determination of electron neutrino mass from the beta radiation spectrum of tritium. Participation at the international project KATRIN in Karlsruhe.

Theory

Study of the nuclear and hypernuclear structure, interactions of hadrons with nuclei at low as well as high energies, hadrons properties in nuclear matter. Study of the matter at the quark and gluon level. Study of the electroweak interactions.

Mathematical physics

Development and applications of the mathematical apparatus of the quantum mechanics which is the foundation of nuclear and solid state physics. Mathematically rigorously solvable geometrically nontrivial  models inspired by the problems of nanoscopic solid state physics. Study of theories with the non-hermitean Hamiltonians.

In the interdisciplinary and oriented research the main activities will be the following.

Nuclear analytical methods

Development and implementation of nuclear analytical methods using neutron beams as well as charged particles beams of the electrostatic accelerator. The use of nuclear analytical methods for the needs for the needs of other disciplines like material research, ecology, biology, chemistry, archaeology.

Neutron diffraction

Neutron scattering and diffraction on condensed matter. Materials research. Neutron optics. Experiments at the reactor LVR-15 in Řež, providing access also to external research groups.

Nuclear Physics for Future Energy-Production Technologies

Study of physical processes important for the perspective energetic technologies –accelerator driven transmutation systems and fusion systems.  Nuclear physics data measurements. Participation in  the national, European and worldwide research programs.

Dosimetry of ionising radiation

Development of dosimetry and microdosimetry of ionising radiation. Measurement of radiation from natural as well as man-produced sources, for the purposes of ecology as well as   professional exposition and radiation protection. Experimental and theoretical studies of the radiation biological effects.

Radiopharmaceuticals

Research and development of the radiopharmaceuticals on the basis of fluorine, holmium, crypton, astatine, iodine and further eclements. Radiopharmaceuticals  with short-lived isotopes for the positron emission tomography. Collaboration with the medical institutions.

Accelerators

Cyclotron U-120M: Modernization of cyclotron units, especially ion sources, vacuum system, control software.

Tandetron 4130 MC: Installation of ion beam lines and a microprobe.

Mikrotron BMT 25: Beam monitoring and enhancement of the beam stability, bremsstrahlung influences on the current measurement.
